Theory Test

Multiple Choice Part

The multiple choice part consists of 50 questions and are based on the following three books:

  • The Highway Code;
  • Know your traffic signs;
  • Driving - the essential skills;

Study these to learn the rules and skills you’ll be tested on. You can buy them from most high street and online book shops. To pass you must correctly answer at least 43 questions out of 50, in the allocated time.

Before you start the actual test, you have the option of working through a practice session which lasts up to 15 minutes. This way you can get a hang of what the system is like before starting the actual test.

Our theory test courses are delivered by DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency) registered approved driving instructors, who all have an extensive level of experience in delivering excellent training to learner drivers.

Hazard Perception Part

The hazard perception part of the theory test consists of 14 video clips. They each last about a minute or so. The clips contain various types of hazards, therefore you need to be paying attention to everything around you, such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions.

You get points for spotting the developing hazards as soon as they start to happen. You should respond by pressing the mouse button as soon as you see a hazard developing. A developing hazard is something that would cause you to take action, like changing speed or direction.

You can score up to 5 points for each developing hazard. To get a high score, click as you see the hazard starting to develop. You don't lose points if you click and get it wrong. However, you shouldn't click continuously or in a pattern (in the real test you will fail if you do this). The test contains 15 score-able hazards, this means at least one of the 14 clips will contain two hazards. The pass mark for this part of the test is 44 out of 75 for car drivers.
